Interview with Author Udo Fehring

54 years old, Author Udo Fehring is in a relationship and lives in Leverkusen, Germany. He work as a SAP consultant for a medium-sized automotive supplier. His hobbies besides writing are mainly traveling and running. He regularly takes part in cross-country runs or street-runs. The highlight of 2022 was the participation in and successful completion of the Cologne Marathon.

He started writing books in 2011 with the children’s book “Streets of London”. This is about a nine-year-old boy’s friendship in London with a homeless man.

After self-publishing a few children’s and young adult books in the first years, he switched to different genres (political, socially critical, topical), mostly for adults.

Tell me more about your latest book

My latest English book had the title “In the Ghetto”. The book is based on the same-named old Elvis-song. It is about a single mother who lives with her three children in a slum of Chicago. Thomas, her eldest son, gets on the “wrong track” and comes into contact with drugs and crime. Catrina, his mother is pregnant again and the father, like the fathers of the other children, has left without taking care of child and mother and so Catrina is again faced with the task of getting through her growing family on her own …

What was the most challenging aspect of writing this book?

I started that book some time ago and then left it in my drawer. When starting again on the half-ready-story it was hard to get into the story again and also find an appropriate end.

What is your normal procedure to get your books published?

I am used to publish my books via self-publishing. I found a nice self-publisher in Germany (Epubli) and working with this publisher works well. After some negative experiences in the beginning to find a full-service-publisher, I gave up to search for it any more. I think it is really hard to get such a publisher and most of the publishers don’t want to take a risk and engage a new and unknown writer.

How important are the elements of character, setting, and atmosphere to a story, and why?

The characters are the most inspiring parts of a story. They breathe in life in a story. To be a bit self-critic, sometimes I miss to tell the reader more about the lives of the main actors in the story.

How many books have you written so far?

In total I have published 16 books so far. 3 of them I have translated to English.

Here is the list of my books (titles translated into English):

What’s the best way to market your books?

To be honest, I have not found the perfect way of marketing my books. More or less I do it on my own. I post the blurbs in social media. But also, to be honest my readers are more or less friends of mine or my mother.

What is your writing routine? When you write, do you plan or outline ahead

I have no real routine. The title “In the Ghetto” I wrote mostly during my holidays. The book “Alone against the cartel” I wrote much during night-times. I have to confess that I don’t sleep well at night ☹

How hard or easy is it to establish and maintain a career in writing?

For me it is only a hobby. My books are more or less short-stories (less that 100 pages). So, I am missing a lot to become a professional writer.

What is your advice for aspiring writers?

Search theme that really touch your heart. Then it is much easier to write as when you are not “in” the story.
