Tell me more about your latest book

Out into the Desert: Thriving Outside Organized Religion is an honest assessment of religion, especially Western Christianity, in the 21st century. It includes our stories from 20 years of ministry.

Part 1 is ten considerations including, “Are we addicted to religion?” and “Would Jesus go church?”  We should all take some time to evaluate whether organized religion is necessary or effective, considering all these factors.

Part 2 considers whether it is possible to thrive outside organized religion in the age we live.  Part of this evaluation employs the Beatitudes to guide the discussion.

Ask better questions, do the evaluation and join the discussion.

What was the most challenging aspect of writing this book?

Consider that people who are engaged in religion are totally convinced they are doing the right things.  To engage their curiosity and reason without being overly critical was difficult.

What is your normal procedure to get your books published?

Initially I write the rough draft then do some preliminary edits.  After that, I get some feedback from others and hopefully some endorsements.  After making any necessary changes, I submit the idea and manuscript to my publisher.

Do you view writing as a kind of spiritual practice?

Absolutely!  It helps me know what I think.  Sometimes, while I’m writing, I gain insight and things connect together.

How many books have you written so far?

Apparent Faith: What Fatherhood Taught Me About God

The Tea Shop

Being: A Journey Toward Presence and Authenticity

The Hotel

Out into the Desert: Thriving Outside Organized Religion

Parenting Deconstructed (contributor)

What’s the best way to market your books?

Find people that are questioning their beliefs and asking questions.

How hard or easy is it to establish and maintain a career in writing?

It’s difficult because there are so many books available.  Writing has to be a personal release first.

What is your advice for aspiring writers?

Just start writing and keep doing it.
