Interview with Author Janet Ashmore
Author Janet Ashmore love to teach children, which she has been doing since she was a teenager! Her first “job” was babysitting small children in her area, at their homes. Both of her sisters were born after she turned 15 and she babysat and taught them as well. For the next 40 years, throughout her nursing career, she taught children informally in hospitals, churches, or in schools and day-cares wherever she lived.
In 2021 she wrote a series of nine books for children on the Fruit of The Spirit. She self-published Larry the Llama Learns about Love as the first book in this series. Her hope is to inspire positive and loving interactions among children through fun and entertaining stories, and to add in some interesting facts about the featured animals too.
Tell me more about your latest book
“Larry the Llama Learns about Love” is a story about a llama and a lamb who get lost after a wind blows the fence down. They learn several lessons about caring for each other, such as being kind, apologizing, and helping each other. They also learn an important safety lesson about what to do when they get lost. I included story questions and answers at the end of the book to help children to know that if they do go somewhere without telling anyone, they could get lost. At the end of the book is a list of ten interesting things to know about llamas and a page that shows Galatians 5:22 which states that love is a fruit of the Spirit.
What was the most challenging aspect of writing this book?
I wanted to keep my book fun, helpful, educational, not bossy or preachy. I want the kids to look forward to learning things and to develop a love for reading, too.
What is your normal procedure to get your books published?
For this book, I looked for a publishing company that could do the formatting, cover, and illustrations, but where I had complete control of the content. LifeRich Publishing meets all of my requirements while providing excellent service.
Do you view writing as a kind of spiritual practice?
I do in the sense that I am trying to show children the loving character of God, or the wonderful ways His Spirit is with us.
How many books have you written so far?
“Larry the Llama Learns about Love, Love is a Fruit of The Spirit”
“Larry the Llama Learns about Love COLORING BOOK”
My other books are not published yet, but I hope to publish “Spiker the Jumping Spider Learns about Joy” by the end of this year.
What’s the best way to market your books?
They are beautifully illustrated children’s books for ages 3-8 years. They are fun-filled entertaining and educational choices to make a delightful gift or gift bundle, such as the hardcover, coloring book and crayons, stickers, or other novelty items.
How hard or easy is it to establish and maintain a career in writing?
I think getting started is the most difficult. I always wanted to do it, but never followed through. Then one day I sat down and wrote some stories, sent them to beta readers, revised and then rewrote. The kids wanted more and said they would buy my book if I had one, so I researched traditional and self-publishing options. I decided to self-publish then started taking marketing classes.
What is your advice for aspiring writers?
Have fun and enjoy what you are doing. Prioritize the things that mean the most to you. Stay positive!
