Interview with Author Rose Titus

Author Rose Titus lives in cold, dreary New England, with two manipulative cats and a very out of date Macintosh with which she creates horror and fantasy fiction.  She also has a restored classic car to ride around while in search of adventure.

Her work has previously appeared in Lost WorldsLynx EyeBog GobMausoleumMidnight Times, Blood Moon Rising Magazine, The Bugle, Weird Terrain, Descend, Wicked WheelsCarnival of Aces,The Dead River Review, and other literary magazines.  Her novella Night Home, her novels After Darkand All the Way to the Moon, and her collection of short stories Key 13 have been published with Hypothesis Press and are available on Amazon.

Tell me more about your latest book

My most recent book is All the Way to the Moon, which is Book Three in the Vampire Next Doorseries.  All of the characters in Book One and Book Two will appear, but in this book I’ve added a werewolf character to help fight the bad guys, an evil billionaire and his hired hit man.

What was the most challenging aspect of writing this book?

The research – I wanted it to be realistic, even though it’s a fantasy novel.  I researched the origins of the werewolf legend and its link to shamanism.  I read a lot of books about werewolves, shamanism, and actually communicated online with a real shaman about the subject. The werewolf legend originated with European pre-Christian shamanism, not with the old Hollywood black and white movies, believe it or not.

What is your normal procedure to get your books published?

I proofread extremely well and make revisions to make the manuscript perfect before sending it.  I work with smaller publishers, since I don’t have an agent and I’m not famous – not yet, anyway.

Do you view writing as a kind of spiritual practice?

Definitely.  You know, when I write, it’s almost like I’m channeling something – something that’s already out there.  It’s like the story is already out there in the ether and I’m just typing the events, like I’m watching a movie and typing it all.  If you’ve ever read about Patience Worth – supposedly a spirit who directed a living writer to produce literature on her behalf, from beyond – it’s sort of like that.  When I’m writing, sometimes I feel myself go into a trace like state.  It’s hard to describe.  I’m sort of in a dream-state of some kind.  Then I wake up and the story is there on my computer screen.

How many books have you written so far?

I have four books published and available on Amazon – Night Home, After Dark, All the Way to the Moon, and my collection of stories – Key 13.

What’s the best way to market your books?

Keep showing them around, keep offering and presenting your work. Be persistent.  Keep at it.  Go the distance.  Don’t give up.  You’re not going to achieve anything by giving up.

How hard or easy is it to establish and maintain a career in writing?

It’s very hard.  In fact, like most writers, I have a regular job that pays the bills.

What is your advice for aspiring writers?

Don’t give up, but proofread – and I mean really, really proofread. Check your grammar, and check your punctuation and word usage.  Use a thesaurus and a dictionary.  Don’t let the computer think for you.  Read it all back to yourself, and then ask yourself, does this make sense?  Is this a story someone would want to finish?  I often feel that as a society, we’ve forgotten the importance of good writing.  A lot of people just type and don’t care if it makes sense.  Sad, but true.  If you want to be a writer, then be a good writer, and make that effort. Don’t just put a story on a page – work at it.  Make it good before sending it.
