Tell me more about your latest book
My newest children’s book has been inspired by many conversations with my granddaughter by our pond at my house. The frog story developed years ago when my husband realized that I told my children that the frog makes a kwaak sound (that is what I learned in Germany) and I did not know in the USA the frog makes a ribbit sound. Therefore, I began to explore how children are affected by these differences of languages and yes, even animal sounds. I began to realize that children tease each other in school for looking different, speaking different and so much more and most of it comes from parents teaching this dis-like and hate at home.
What was the most challenging aspect of writing this book?
The most challenging part about writing this book was to relive experiences of racism and being shunned and laughed at for simply having a foreign accent a brown husband and yes, because I thought the frog sound is kwaak.
What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?
My research comes from interacting with others and living in different communities and helping others from different countries and heritages and speaking out prejudices and injustices to those who do not fit the status quo.
How many books have you written so far?
My bestselling book Black and white makes Brown tells our multi-cultural lovestory.
Constance the little Angel wants curls
I love it Marriage enrichment book
Franzl, the little foreign frog from Vabaria
There are numerous unpublished books I have written to use during my racial and cultural awareness sessions.
What’s the best way to market your books?
I mostly market my books by visiting radio stations on-line streams, social media and story time.
What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?
Once I begin to write I let it flow until my heart tells me to stop. Sometimes I am so deeply hurt that I need to stop for a while and then get back to the story. Everything in all of my books is based on real events.
What is your advice for aspiring writers?
Don’t overthink everything if you have a story in your mind begin to write. Just start, use a notebook and take it everywhere and just write. The editing and organization comes later. It is as simple yet complicated as that!
