Interview with Author Lakisha Johnson

Author Lakisha Johnson has been writing since 2012 and has penned more then twenty-five novels, devotionals and journals. You can find topics of faith, abuse, marriage, love, loss, grief, losing hope etc. on the pages of her many books.

In addition to being a self-published author, she’s also a wife of 22 years, mother of 2, Co-Pastor of Macedonia MB Church in Hollywood, MS; Sr. Business Analyst with FedEx, Devotional Blogger, the product of a large family. She’s a college graduate with 2 Associate Degrees in IT and a Bachelor of Science in Bible.

LaKisha writes from her heart and doesn’t take the credit for what God does because if you were to strip away everything; you’d see that Lakisha is simply a woman who boldly, unapologetically and gladly loves and works for God.  Ask her and she’ll tell you, ”It’s not just writing, it’s ministry.”

Tell me more about your latest book:

My latest book is called Infidelity. As the name says, it’s about a woman who chooses infidelity to get what she wants, but it doesn’t work out as planned. How quickly we forget that things done in the dark always comes to light. Sometimes the best laid plans can spell disaster or even cost you a life.

What was the most challenging aspect of writing this book?

Making sure it wasn’t saturated with drama. Sometimes you can include too much, and the story gets lost.

What is your normal procedure to get your books published?

Write! Lol! As funny as this sounds, it’s what works for me. I don’t have a check list of things I have to do or certain days or ways to write. Once I have time to sit, I write.

Do you view writing as a kind of spiritual practice?

Yes, you can say that in a sense. Being a preacher, writing is another outlet for me to “preach” God’s word and I consider it a form of ministry work.

How many books have you written so far? List and name them all here.

I currently have 25 books, devotionals and journals. They are – The Family that Lies, The Family that Lies: Merci Restored, Dear God, 2:32 AM, The Pastor’s Admin, The Marriage Bed, The Forgotten Wife, Broken, Chased, Covet, Last Call, When the Vows Break (3 book series), Shattered (2 book series), Tense, I’m Not Crazy, Infidelity, Bible Chicks: Book 2, Doses of Devotion, You only live Once, Surviving Me, Still Fighting, HERoine Addict, Be a Fighter

What’s the best way to market your books?

Social media, by far is the best form of marketing. I also use web sites, Fiverr, Facebook and Amazon Ads. Anything that can get me in front of new and existing readers.

How hard or easy is it to establish and maintain a career in writing?

It’s very hard yet rewarding. I say hard because it takes dedication, time, patience and thick skin. We all wish we could have overnight success like in the movies, but sometimes it doesn’t work that way. Being an indie author, there are literally days I spend hours coming up with ways to reach new markets, gain new readers while keeping the ones I already have. It’s a constant work. However, on the flip side, I love it. I have a broad group of readers who got my back and I work hard to ensure they get the quality they’re looking and paying for.

What is your advice for aspiring writers?

Take the time. Again, it’s a hard yet rewarding process but it takes patience. Study. Don’t rush to release content. Quality matters. Be proud of yourself. Keep posting even if you never get a like. Keep writing and publishing even if sales are low. Believe in yourself. Toot your own horn.
