Tell me more about your latest book
I Had A Secret For Seventeen Years is my first book. It tells my life story, but is centered around the abortion I had as a teenager. I never intended to publish this story, but I had so many people ask when I would be writing a book, so I decided to. My story is hard a one, but also one of hope. I pray that it educates readers on abortion, but also that it encourages readers to trust God, even with the darkest aspects of our lives, because He is faithful to bring beauty from brokenness.
What was the most challenging aspect of writing this book?
This most challenging aspect of writing this book was walking back through each part of my story with very open eyes, in order to share the specifics. I spent years and years pushing memories away and worked hard to avoid thinking about my past at all. So, purposefully digging through those old memories and emotions was difficult. I do believe it brought more healing for me, however, so I am grateful even though it was hard.
What is your normal procedure to get your books published?
Well, this is my first book so I don’t have a “normal” procedure but, I did have a wonderful experience with this book. Once I had several chapters written, I submitted a proposal to several different publishing companies. A few weeks later I had an offer and then signed a contract. I was given 4 more months to complete my writing and then submitted it for them to complete the process. It was smooth and the company was easy to work with.
Do you view writing as a kind of spiritual practice?
Absolutely! For me, writing is a daily practice. I journal feelings, thoughts, concerns, prayers, answers to prayers, etc. Writing always helps me to filter through all my emotions and release stress. Writing scripture and prayers also connects me more with my Heavenly Father.
How many books have you written so far?
This is my first book, I Had A Secret For Seventeen Years.
What’s the best way to market your books?
Because I am knew to this, I am still learning how to market and get my book out there. So far, social media has been a very useful tool.
How hard or easy is it to establish and maintain a career in writing?
I don’t see myself as a career author but I do hope to write more books. (I actually have several in mind and one started already) If writing should become my career, I would truly enjoy that but I don’t have much information about that yet.
What is your advice for aspiring writers?
My advice is to go for it! I doubted my ability to write a book but once I was done with the publishing process and people began reading my story, I was so encouraged. The stories we have to share may be just what someone needs to read.
