Interview with Author Robert Hrzic

Author Robert Hrzic grew up in Toronto, Canada, but he now lives in Europe as he has dual Canadian and EU citizenship. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurial economics and then a master’s degree in project management right after that.

Robert used to be more interested in the traditional method of publishing by going to book publishing company, but as he looked around, they’re not as numerous as one might think. He became a buyer on Amazon last year, so he could buy products from North America, Europe and Japan (because not all products he’s interested in are available at the local store).  Robert always knew that Amazon primarily sold books and he wondered if it is possible to publish a book through Amazon. When he noticed that they have their own self-publishing platform, he was rejoiced. Now Robert is working on his two dream jobs, one of which is definitely being an author. Instead of publishing a book traditionally, he found self-publishing to be more fulfilling and is having fun in working towards that goal.

Tell me more about your latest book

My latest book is called Rogue Flag, it is a spy thriller and military fiction novel. The book is set in the near future where NATO and the SCO are in a new Cold War. In the midst of all this, a deranged populist steals nuclear warheads from four of the UN Security Council members for the intent of starting his own micronation. With the world on the brinksmanship, a group of operatives must locate the warheads before this Cold War turns in World War III with three nuclear armed sides.

What was the most challenging aspect of writing this book?

The main challenge I faced was making sure each of my chapters reached 10 pages at least. I kind of have a system and it goes for all my books. XD

What is your normal procedure to get your books published?

After I have written the books and after my illustrator makes the copies for me, I follow a rather simple process. I log onto my Amazon Kindle account and fill in all the necessary information along with uploading the manuscript. Once the book is uploaded, Amazon verifies it and it is live on all Amazon markets.

What motivated you to become an author?

As a massive fantasy, sci fi and thriller fan, I’ve always had many ideas about certain fairy tales and geopolitical outcomes. Since I don’t have a movie studio of my own to make a movie or TV series, I turn to the only way I can express my imagination and that is through writing books. So, I taught myself how to write books and here I am today.

How many books have you written so far?

So far, I have written eight books as I have been writing them since I was a teenager. I have only published one book so far and it is Rogue Flag but as a little sneak peak I will mention the titles of some books I will publish later on. The next one will be Choice Catchers, which is a fantasy book. Then there will be The Istanbul Affair, which is another thriller and then after than I will publish Pastorius: Operation Epidemic, which will be an alternate history science fiction horror book.

As an author, do you prefer the traditional book or online version? Why?

I personally prefer to have a traditional book as I like to physically feel the book while I read it and I’m also a collector so I would like to put them on my shelf.

How hard or easy is it to establish and maintain a career in writing?

Since I am just starting, I will say that it is challenging in the beginning. But in general it’s not a difficult process, it just requires constant care and attention.

What is your advice for aspiring writers?

Be sure to always check your grammar and spelling after you finish writing. Then I suggest you also come up with a good cover. Then after you’ve independently published your book (I suggest on Amazon), be sure to put on Goodreads as well and market your book throughout social media and everywhere. Remember to be consistent. That’s how you get readers.
