‘Land of the Black Squirrels’ by Mwalim

‘Land of the Black Squirrels’ is a Bronx Boheme Novel by Author Mwalim (Morgan James Peters). He is a multi-award-winning storyteller/spoken word artist, playwright, oral historian, singer, songwriter, music producer, and filmmaker.
This book is the first book in a series called “Bronx Boheme”. This book’s story is about an extended family of musicians and artists growing up in the Northeast Bronx during the 1970s and 1980s in New York city, and integrating into the underground arts scenes of the 1990s and 2000s. It’s an allegory about the musical culture of the Bronx that gave birth to Hip-Hop, and where jazz met Hip-Hop.
Originally, it started out as a short storytelling piece back in 1993 and expanded into a long-form storytelling that Author Mwalim performed at the Nuyorican Poet’s Café in 2003. After performing it for a few years, he decided to write it out as a novel. The story kept flowing and realized he had written two and a half novels worth of material, so he extracted elements and made it book one.
With a total of 266 pages, ‘Land of the Black Squirrels’ is a book about music, life and much more than that.
As I was reading this book, and turning pages to read more, I could sort of picture the places and hear the music as the author described them in this book. Even though the book’s story is fictional, readers might wonder if it was inspired by the author’s own story.
Even though this book is a work of fiction, keep in mind that The Bronx is a place rich with stories, melodies, and spirits that linger long after the people are gone.
The book cover is also so attractive, and the title catches the readers eyes and curiosity easily. I recommend this book as it will take each reader on a full journey full of sights, smells, tastes and adventures. Also I recommend this book to anyone to likes jazz and hip hop music.
