Tell me more about your latest book
“Basketball Beyond the Bench” is a children’s book about Basketball careers. It was written to educate kids about the many people working behind the scenes of a sporting event. When kids are into sports they only learn about the player. A lot of children dream of becoming a NBA or WNBA stars. But, there are amazing jobs that kids can do besides just being an athlete. I wrote the book to inspire kids with different gifts who may not be an athlete, but wants to have an awesome career in sports.
The book is interactive an informative. It gets the kids involve by asking the children to picture themselves as a coach, for example and giving a real life scenario of what a coach does. There is also a message at the end of my book that give points to help children be successful in anything they choose to become. Hopefully, after reading my book kids will be inspire to explore many more options in sports careers.
What was the most challenging aspect of writing this book?
Believing in myself. The biggest obstacle, I faced was self-doubt. I had to talk to myself plenty of times because doubt would kick in and say, “Nobody will like or even read your book”. Then I remembered, I had to write the book to inspire and uplift children that may not be the best athlete. However, they may possess other gifts and have a fulfilling career in sports. Once I believed in myself, I was able to write and complete my children’s book.
When writing a book, how do you keep things fresh, for both your readers and yourself?
When I wrote my book, I kept it fresh by going to basketball games and watching everyone at the event. I would be so amazed because I would see so many jobs that children could do. I also did a lot of research on the occupations so that is current and relevant.
What is your normal procedure to get your books published?
I am a self-publisher. My publisher was Get Write Publishing and I used Kindle Direct Publishing to print my children’s book.
What motivated you to become an author?
My children motivated me to become an author. My daughter was a very good basketball player. She was extremely athletic in high school and college. My son was not passionate about sports he love being behind the scenes. So my husband purchased him a video camera. He would filmed and even shoot commercials during half time. He was so talented in videography, he produce highlight tapes to send to potential colleges for my daughter.
My daughter graduated college and became a coach. My son has his own videography company. He makes commercials, short films and video boxing tournaments.
I was motivated to write my book because my children developed unique gifts and talents. One was athletic and the other was artistic. Both used their individual abilities and are very successful in their careers. By writing this book, I want to leave a legacy for future generations to let children know it is okay to be different.
How many books have you written so far?
This is my first children’s book that I have written. In its’ first year, December 2019 my book won two awards in the Joy and Company Christian Literary Awards. The “Reader’s Choice Award” and the “Henri Award.”
I am currently in the process of writing my second book coming out in 2021. I won’t spoil the surprise, stay tune!
Do you think someone could be a writer if they don’t feel emotion strongly?
I think they can as long as they have a message for the readers.
How hard or easy is it to establish and maintain a career in writing?
It was hard at first, because I did not know how to get started. Writing is not my primary field. My friend recommended a writing strategist. She guided me through the entire process from start to finish. Now, that I wrote my first book, I believe going forward it will be easier.
What is your advice for aspiring writers?
Never give up on dreams. Take it day by day because some days you may feel defeated and un-inspired. But remember you are writing to motivate and help your audience!
