Interview with Author Kela Calvin

Author Kela Calvin is from Virginia.  She has a degree in human services and has worked individuals with intellectual disabilities as well as serious mental illnesses. As an author, she aims to motivate and inspire others through the art of storytelling.  She also writes poetry and perform spoken word on occasion.

Ramona: Tell me more about your latest book

Kela Calvin: My latest book published on Amazon is titled Living Proof: A Bethany Mason Experience. Bethany was released from prison after a 15-year sentence. She fights to clear her name and finds out the truth about what happened to her family, while balancing her life with mental illness. There are many twists and turns throughout her journey and surprises.

Ramona: What was the most challenging aspect of writing this book?

Kela Calvin: It was somewhat of a challenge to write this book. I became very empathetic of her main character’s dilemma. It reminded me of the stereotypes and biases that my mentally ill clients faced when I was a case manager once upon a time. However, I felt it was important to continue to spread awareness on this issue.

Ramona: Do you ever struggle with writer’s block? How do you overcome it?

Kela Calvin: At times I do struggle with writer’s block. During that period of time, I find that it is easier to read books and listen to music to keep my mind active, instead of pondering over what to write next. I also keep a notebook near at all times. A hint if writing inspiration can occur at any given moment.

Ramona: What motivated you to become an author?

Kela Calvin: Since I was a child, I’ve always loved writing. In middle school, I once wrote a story and created it into a book. I received the best grade in class and was summoned to read it aloud. I later learned to appreciate writing as a great form of self-expression.

Ramona: How many books have you written so far? List and name them all here

Kela Calvin: So far, I have written two books. They are titled Worthy and Living proof. They are both available on Amazon and Kindle Unlimited.

Ramona: What are some of your best practices as a writer?

Kela Calvin: A couple of my practices that I implement in my writing are keeping a notebook on hand to jot down ideas and writing the conclusion of my book first. This is unique as it allows me to then fill in the holes of the story along the way.

Ramona: What is your advice for aspiring writers?

Kela Calvin: My advice to aspiring writers is to be unique. We all have a story to tell that will be relatable for someone. It may even inspire someone.
