Interview with Marieke J Treloar

Author Marieke J Treloar can usually be found reading a book, and that book will more likely than not be a spirited fantasy, full of fearless female protagonists and dashing military heroes. Writing a novel was always on her bucket list, and eventually, after producing many other stories, it has become a reality. ‘Rowland The Senator’s Son’ is the first book in her series – Forces at Play.

When not absorbed in her latest gripping page-turner, Marieke designs and creates beautiful jewellery, frequents the best cafés of her beautiful hometown, and otherwise spends far too much time at both her laptop and jewellery bench. She lives in Australia, with her puppies and family.

Ramona: Tell me more about your latest book

Marieke J Treloar: Rowland, The Senator Son is the first in the “Forces at Play Series”. This time we follow Rowland Jeffers District Attorney for the City of New York. He is drawn into a dark and fascinating world in an attempt to keep a promise to his dying father to protect a special woman. It is really a story of one man’s destiny and one woman’s past, a very unconventional tale of politics, sex and revenge.

Can Rowland keep his promise and look after what his father thought so precious? Or will her past destroy them both?

Ramona: What was the most challenging aspect of writing?

Marieke J Treloar: Quite frankly it is that I am partially dyslexic, it has taken me years to work out how I could put on paper the story’s that constantly run through my head.  It is only with the help of great software like NaturalReaders.com and having an amazing editor and proof-reader that I have gained the confidence to write and keep writing.

Ramona: What motivated you to become an author?

Marieke J Treloar: Good question, I am a trained jeweller and a person whose mind never stops. I use creation as a form of meditation. Late last year, I basically ran out of money to buy metal and therefore had no materials to create with.

Unable to express myself in the usual manner, I literally woke up one morning (2am) and in one night penned the outline for my first series of historical fiction novels called ‘The Panacea Quest’.  After sixteen hours I had not only created the outline but main character descriptions and a full timeline as well as written four chapters of the first book.  It was as though I had detonated TNT in an avalanche zone.

Ramona: What brought you to write your books?

Marieke J Treloar: My guilty pleasure is Fiction, really anything that includes alien romance or historical fantasy with smart, sassy female protagonists and dashing military hero’s. So that is why I wrote The Panacea Quest series first.

Then I was having a discussion with a friend about that 50 Shades book, you know the very very popular one.  The comment was made that no clever woman would ever play in such an unsafe way let alone be waiting to be snapped up by some imaginary brooding billionaire.  So ‘What if’ the story was of clever strong women who were in charge and presto the storyline for Rowland, The Senators Son was born.

Ramona: How many books have you written so far?

Marieke J Treloar: I have four completed books two of which are published. The other two are in the editing phase.

Current release is Rowland, the Senators Son – Book 1 of Forces at Play Series.

The book 1 of The Panacea Quest – The Tempest of Eerikki was released late 2018.  Book 2 The Flowers of Frode is due for release end of 2019, will be shortly followed in early 2020 by Book 3 – The Gem of Greenway.

Ramona: What book or books have had a strong influence on you or your writing?

Marieke J Treloar: I am prone to following those authors who are able to successfully pull off writing a series of books.  I love the idea of characters and stories developing over time.  For my romantic side anything by S.E. Smith, M.K. Eidem and Anna McCaffrey.  For writing style – I love those novels by John Irving.

Ramona: Away from books, would you rather have an endless Summer or an endless Winter?

Marieke J Treloar: Omg, that is so easy to answer, endless beautiful hot gorgeous summer. I was born in central Queensland, an Australian State known for its brilliant weather. “Beautiful one day perfect the next” as Tourism Queensland tagline says. I relish the heat and warm weather it is like a recharge to my creative side. Currently living in Melbourne and we have just had a hideous winter, bring on the sun.

Ramona: What is your advice for aspiring writers?

Marieke J Treloar: Three things in short order.  Firstly, write every day (even if it is just an elaborate shopping list) and I mean every day. Writing involves both skill and passion, both need to be fed daily.

Secondly, ignore the negative comments of your teachers, they don’t have crystal balls and have absolutely no idea of the person you could become. Point in fact I remember the day I was told that ‘I could not write a sentence to save my own life’.

And thirdly, it is more than okay to self-publish but an editor and a proof-reader are essential. They need to be people you can trust to tell you the truth. (Thank heavens my sister supplies me with her brutal honesty as my proof-reader).

  1. David Treloar says:

Rowland is a great read with you hanging for the next chapter. A combination of politics, murder, sex and revenge. On top of the locations from new york to the Aussie outback, it will draw you in with anticipation of the next book. The villans are a combination of pure evil to corrupt. The flow leaves you to guess as to the twist and what’s next. At 200 pages this is a quick good read
