Get to know author Mina Monroe

MINA MONROE is an avid writer and lover of the arts. Born and raised in New York City between the boroughs of Harlem, the Bronx and Brooklyn; she has seen a lot and been through a lot. Although dancing is her first love, writing became her outlet at a very young age.

Being a shy young lady, writing was the only way she felt comfortable enough to express herself. It was a way for her to escape many of the harsh realities she faced growing up in a broken home due to drug addiction and other adult issues that affected her childhood.  Middle School was when she began the art of story telling through her fiction and during class was when students would exchange and pass her stories around eager for more.

This fixation to create and the feedback she received through her readers at a very young age only intensified once she began High School.  Mina hated school and spent majority of her High School years skipping to go to TRL, 106th and Park or shopping in SoHo with fellow students. These were the perks of attending a High School that was smack in the middle of the busy New York streets. Never a follower, always a leader; she never believed in peer pressure.

She is the author of Salacious, an erotic thriller about a young promiscuous woman whose life gets turned upside down by her vengeful twin sister, Valerie. Salacious II is the second and final chapter of the dueling twins.  Another passion of Mina is helping others. She earned her Bachelors of Science in Psychology and is in the middle of her Master of Arts in Addictions Counseling. She hopes to have her own practice one day while still creating works of fiction and maybe some non-fiction in the future. Mina is always working on multiple projects at a time and is the master of multi-tasking.

Mina Monroe – a woman of many talents and the Queen of Resiliency.

Ramona:  Tell me more about your latest book

Mina Monroe: My book is a sexy lesbian erotic thriller. Although it entails steamy love scenes as well as the drama, there is a deeper meaning behind Salacious II: Past to Present. Sometimes in order to move forward in life, you have to first go back and face the demons that you’ve chose to ignore by either denial or numbing. It is the second part of my first novel Salacious and answers a lot of unanswered questions that left my readers on edge. It identifies mental disorders, family secrets that find their way into the adulthood of my main characters, it embraces getting help and being vulnerable but most importantly it describes forgiveness and healing. Salacious II: Past to Present is a page turner from beginning to end.

Ramona:  Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Mina Monroe: The most challenging thing about my writing aside from writer’s block is finishing a story. I have a hard time with finishing because I become so attached to my characters. It’s similar to a break-up in a sense since each and every character is an intimate portrait of myself as well as the people that have come in and out of my life, and my experiences.

Ramona:  What motivated you to become an author?

Mina Monroe: Being able to share my craft and passion with the world is what motivated me to become an author. To always have an intimate piece of me when I am long and gone. When you are an artist of any sort, you will always be immortal when you share and inspire others. My readers and supporters who have been reading my work for years long before I was published are my motivation.

Ramona:  What brought you to write your latest book?

Mina Monroe: I missed the previous characters from my first published novel, Salacious and felt that there were a lot of unanswered questions to elaborate on. My readers were also not happy about the way I ended Salacious and I felt that I owed it to them to not only answer their questions, but to give them more as well as a deeper perspective on my main characters.

Ramona:  How many books have you written so far?

Mina Monroe: I have written so many stories that date back to my high school days. Writing is like the air I breathe and the water I need in order to survive. I plan to revamp and post some of my oldies but goodies on my Wattpad page at the following link: https://my.w.tt/XYAe8w2pzR

Ramona:  What book or books have had a strong influence on you or your writing?

Mina Monroe: Sistah Souljah’s: The Coldest Winter Ever is one of my favorite books. I’ve read it about five times. Teri Woods: True to the Game and of course Zane’s Addicted that she adapted into an amazing movie.

Ramona:  How hard is it to establish and maintain a career in fiction writing?

Mina Monroe: It’s not hard at all for me. Fiction writing is my escapism and how I am able to exercise my imagination. I can be anyone I want and go anywhere in the world, now who wouldn’t want to have a career in unlimited mileage without limits?
