INTERVIEW:- Get to know author Navnish K. Khera

Navnish K. Khera is an educator with a Masters in English and Education and a Diploma in animation and visual effects.  She has worked extensively with developmentally delayed students.  Former students claim that she is one of their favorite teachers! She is a mother to a 6-year-old daughter who is an inspiration for her writing. Navnish's passions for learning and teaching are the inspirations behind her writing engaging stories for young children. She also strives to write stories which have meaning and purpose. The author shares her message of character development in The Being Series. Given the modern and fast-paced lifestyles of today, these lessons are a necessity which should not be ignored or overlooked. The necessary building blocks of character development are woven into each book and product from Bird Ink Publishing.

Ramona: Tell me more about your latest book, and how long have you been writing it?

Navnish K. Khera: A beautiful story about empathy, care, helpfulness and friendship between a bird and a fish.  The story is very close to my heart as it is related to one of the childhood stories my dad used to recite for us during our childhood days.

Ramona: What was the most challenging aspect of writing?

Navnish K. Khera: We face challenges in every area of our life, they motivate us to find solutions to overcome those challenges which in turn make us more efficient. Since the story was so close to my heart it was more of a nostalgia writing it rather than a challenge. The only challenge was to keep the learning and moral values in the writing for the children to learn from it.

Ramona: What motivated you to become an author?

Navnish K. Khera: My motivation is my daughter and my dad. I used to write short stories and small quotes. I used to love expressing my thoughts through my writing. My dad has always encouraged me to pursue my dreams. It’s easy to make children understand something with a story rather than teaching.

Ramona: What brought you to write and publish your book?

Navnish K. Khera: I always wanted to write a book, but the real inspiration came when I was telling an imaginary story to my daughter. To my surprise she started budding into the story with her wonderful imagination and we concluded with a beautiful ending. She was happy about the story we created and I encouraged her to write it down in her journal the next day. Inspired by her enthusiasm, I started working on the story to shape it into a children’s book and get it published for other kids to enjoy and learn from it.

Ramona: How many books have you written so far? List and name them all here

Navnish K. Khera: Being Helpful is my First Children’s Book, a part from the book series I am also launching handwriting practice workbooks for kids to help them improve their handwriting. The workbooks include upper and lower case letters, words, sentences, cursive letters, dyslexia letters etc. They are connected to our book characters as I feel children get excited to work when they relate to a particular character.

Ramona: What book or books have had a strong influence on you or your writing?

Navnish K. Khera: I like to read books and I have read a lot of books in my life some are inspirational, motivational, educational, some related to fitness and the list goes on. However, writing a children’s book had a strong influence from my educational background which is more towards understanding the viewpoint of children to help them learn through a story in a fun and engaging way.

Ramona: How hard is it to establish and maintain a career in writing?

Navnish K. Khera: If writing is something that comes naturally to you and you have a strong passion to pursue this as a career – it surely is the right path for you. When you desire something so passionately, everything starts falling in place and you meet people who help you with your journey as a writer and there is no looking back from there on.

Ramona: What is your advice for aspiring writers?

Navnish K. Khera: My advice to aspiring writers is that, once you decide to take the first step you get enough motivation to take the second and the third and so on. What seems an uphill task is reduced to bits once you start walking on the path.

“Being Helpful” is coming out on 22 March, 2019
