Interview with Author Franklin Posner

Franklin Posner lives in Portland, Oregon. He is not, nor has he ever been, a vampire, suburban or otherwise. Suburban Vampire is his first book.

That's the official story, but it isn't the whole story. Franklin ("Dave" to his friends) has been interested in writing since he was in grade school. However, apart from a few articles published in some obscure corners of the internet, he never seriously pursued writing as a vocation, despite friends and family telling him that he should probably consider it.

And now, many years later, after a few attempts, he has finally achieved his dream. Whether it was maturity, or experience, or a midlife crisis, he's not sure. All he knows is that Franklin Posner is an author, and he's here to stay.

Franklin's first book, Suburban Vampire, is an urban/contemporary fantasy thriller with action, suspense, romance, and all the blood and mayhem associated with vampires, served alongside a healthy dose of humor, both light and dark, sarcastic and subtle. If you're a fan of Charlaine Harris, Anne Rice, Larry Correia, or Jim Butcher, or if you just like a fun read, check it out!

Ramona: How would you describe your writings and what do you like to write most?

Franklin Posner : I would describe my novels as Urban or Contemporary Fantasy Thrillers. They do have elements of suspense, horror, and action, along with a healthy dose of humour. Right now, it’s what I like to write, but I am interested in branching out to other genres like historical fiction, high fantasy, sci-fi, police/detective procedurals, and more.

Ramona: List and name all your books here

I have published two novels so far:

1.   Suburban Vampire: A Tale of the Human Condition – With Vampires

2.   Suburban Vampire Ragnarok

Ramona: Tell me more about your latest book

Franklin Posner : My latest book is Suburban Vampire Ragnarok, the sequel to my first novel, Suburban Vampire: A Tale of the Human Condition – With Vampires. It’s the continuing story of Scott Campbell, a likeable everyman who was forcibly turned by an outlaw vampire. Now that he’s a vampire, he’s struggling with maintaining his humanity against the temptation to act on his vampiric nature. In this second novel, Scott has stumbled upon a magical item that contains the key to unleashing Ragnarok, which is the End of Days according to Norse mythos. Along the way, Scott makes new enemies and meets new friends. It’s a fun rollercoaster of a story, with lots of twists and turns and action, as well as some scary and violent moments, but always with a strong sense of humour.

Ramona: What exactly motivated you to become an author?

Franklin Posner : I’ve always been interested in story-telling, in creating new worlds and experiences and writing them down. Ever since I was a kid, I had a passion for creative writing. When I was about ten or so, I wrote a series of comic stories that I shared with friends and family. The stories (and the art) were a bit simplistic (I was ten years old), but they had cohesive storylines and unique characters, so I had the basic bones of writing even back then. In High School and College, I took courses in writing, and several people told me I had talent and should consider pursuing writing as a career. Well, I didn’t; I pursued other things. However, I would occasionally begin a project, only to give up in frustration. For a long while, I tried to forget about writing, but it was always in my mind. Then, in 2014, I got the urge to go ahead and try writing again. This time, I didn’t let my own negativity get me down, and a few months later I completed my first novel-length project. I’ve completed five more novels since then and have published two.

Ramona: What do you think makes a book sell, or makes a reader buy it?

Franklin Posner : That’s what I’m trying to figure out! Certainly, name recognition is a large part of it. Not too many people know who Franklin Posner is yet, but I’m hoping to change that with more exposure and publicity. Other than that, it’s been an ongoing process for me.

Ramona: What challenges do you think are faced by authors like you, and what’s the worst thing about the book industry according to you?

Franklin Posner : Just getting my work out there into the hands of readers has been my largest challenge. It’s something most independent or new authors face, if they don’t already have some sort of pre-existing interest from the market. The worst thing about the book industry is the purely market-driven and conservative nature of the publishing industry. They don’t like taking chances and generally prefer to play it safe, so getting into the traditional publishing business can be discouraging for new talent like myself.

Ramona: What would you say to other budding writers/authors about pursuing this interest?

Franklin Posner : Just write. That’s it, really; write what you want because it is your passion and your gifting. Tell the story you want to tell, not because you think it will become a best seller or get a movie or TV series based on it, but because it’s your story. And just keep writing until you finish. Don’t second-guess yourself, don’t go back and edit, just keep pushing it, even if you think it’s the worst piece of crap you’ve ever thought up. Just keep on until you are done; you can go back and edit later.
