Interview with Artist Gebs

by Ramona Portelli

Artist since childhood, but as a hobby, a few years ago Gebs began to draw more seriously, giving priority to learning anatomy and composition.

โ€œFrom the moment I realized that, I never wanted to stop drawing, I started working and working.  My family did not agree with my decision to work as an artist. So, at the same time, I was studying at the university, I kept drawing to make sure I never gave up the dream I have.  Nowadays, I generate income by commissioning drawings and designs, while I keep growing as an artistโ€, stated GEBS in this introduction to this interview with RAMONA PORTELLI.

Ramona: Tell me more about your latest artwork

Gebs:  Several of my latest works have a darker theme than usual, as I always try to leave my comfort zone, I think that trying new things and discovering yourself is very important, not only in art, and I really enjoyed and had fun doing those pieces, so you may never know when you will find something you like.

Ramona: Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your artwork?

Gebs: Basically my equipment, I work with a digital tablet and the computer, and this computer is about 10 years old, anyone who knows, 2Gb of RAM are not very good to work.  But in general I always enjoy all the process of my creations.

Ramona: Youโ€™ve been illustrating fantastic drawings for these last past three years.  Can you introduce your kind of artwork to our readers?

Gebs:  Like every artist, over the years, one generates his own art style, and that style speaks a lot about the artist as a person.  My art style has a bit of cartoons and comics, and I always use colours with low saturation, soft colours, because I like the appearance that it can generate, and about the content of my works, it can vary a lot, because as I said before, I like to leave my comfort zone and go crazy about new things.

Ramona: What motivated you to become an artist?

Gebs:  I can say it was a lot of little things that lead me to what I'm doing now, but if I have to pick one, I would say the art community nowadays, as a teen I was afraid to end up with a job I hate and spend my life doing that, but over the years seeing other artists grow and encouraging each other gave me a lot of hope, so, short answer will be the determination of the people to achieve happiness, also all the people who tell me such kind things about my work always makes my day.

Ramona: What memorable responses have you had to your work?

Gebs:  Everyday is memorable when it comes to the nice people who approach me to say how they enjoy to see what I do, to request a commission, or just to simply being there and giving feedback.

I still remember the first time someone approached me to say she loves my artwork, I remember being embarrassing, but really heart warming, and still is, I wouldn't be doing what I love, if it wasn't for the people who support me and my work.

Ramona: How hard is it to establish and maintain a career in art?

Gebs:  For me personally, is still very hard, but I would say is more a promotion work, more than skill work, if I had to be really specific, I would say is a 30% skill and 70% promotion, and sharing your work with others, of course something about artist is, that once we reach a large audience, we can make a living out of what we do.  But, I'm not there yet, so, short answer is, really hard for beginners, and it gets easier with time and exposure.

A global link connecting rather distant minds. I like the creative opportunity offered to authors to talk to their fellow authors and the readership fraternity. Keep-up Portelli
