A day in the Life of a Wellness Coach

Ramona Portelli interviews Diane Borg Bascetta to sneak a peak into what a typical day in her life would look like.

What does your typical day look like?

Oh boy! Needless to say, it's a question that has been posed to me numerous times.

Truthfully, there is no typical day in the life of a wellness coach. It varies based on the individual coach, priorities and projects. For example, one day may be completely dedicated to an event while another is back-to- back wellness profiles. The next day might be dedicated to just taking the day off and soaking the sun on the beach. It really just depends. What I know for certain is that I love it and wouldn't replace it with anything else. Certainly no two days are ever the same, but this should give you a good idea of what to expect as you embark on a career in wellness coaching.

If I had to tell you what I wouldn’t miss doing every single day is to start off my day with a healthy breakfast, usually a nutritious shake as its filling and yummy and helps hold my hunger in check until my next meal. I also fit in some light exercise and some morning motivational videos to keep my mind and body healthy and brimming with positivity. Life places challenges and little obstacles throughout our entire journey. Therefore I believe that feeding positive thoughts to your brain and nutritious food to your body in the morning is the foundation and sets the pace for the rest of your day. What you listen to in the first 20 minutes of waking has the most power over the rest of the day.

I will say that as my own boss, my life is pretty good. It’s you who gets to set the way your day evolves.

What made you choose this path?

I basically started thinking more and more about my daily life, the hectic pace, and what changes I could implement to bring more health and wellness to my life at the age of 35 – but better late than never, right?

Choosing this path was a natural step for me. My previous positions were always restricting me to be office bound and to be sitting down for 8-10 hours a day. This, in turn, led to be get lazy. In addition to that, I wasn’t making the best choices in terms of the foods to eat. I realised that I was very ill-informed about nutrition. I might even say I wasn’t informed at all. Once I decided to change my lifestyle after one-too-many bouts of tiredness, complete exhaustion – there was no looking back. I’ve always wanted to help others become better versions of themselves and this particular field does just that. Working on yourself is obviously key, however the ability to listen to, feel empathy and understand people who may be suffering is also crucial in our field.

Do you enjoy inspiring others?

Teaching aspiring wellness coaches to follow in your footsteps is also something that appealed to me as. Using our own successes as a model, my team and I came up with a plan to help empower other women and men looking to make life changes, and create healthier more balanced lives for themselves and their families. Inspiring others is a great part of the reason that I do what I do. My goal is to make the world healthier and happier, one person at a time.

How do you manage your time?

My days are dedicated to any events I may be working on, social media and meeting with clients and potential business partners. I block time in my schedule for each of these activities and also set aside some time each week to catch up with my team and to do three way calls with my international clients.

I believe in planning in writing how your next day will take place. Once you get in the habit of writing your plan for the next day each night, it will become easier and less time consuming. Once you get this right, it gets easier to avoid getting sucked into too many emails or messages and unproductive tasks. This one is easier said than done!

A couple of times a week I hold Healthy Happy Hours at our nutrition club. It’s an engaging, interactive, and fun hour that results in many new clients each month where we determine our client’s goals and set an action plan for their success. At that initial meeting we also schedule their appointments for the next follow up. This value added service is key to their results. I recommend meeting with clients weekly, at least for the first three months. The client needs to see results and success early on in the relationship, and this is very hard to accomplish if you’re not meeting on a regular basis. I also make myself available for quick phone calls or emails from client. These quick catch up sessions can be effective motivators and help clients stick to their daily plans.

In the evening I’m off to fit clubs (which we offer for free to all of our clients) or any number of events from parties, to catch-ups with friends and family and some Bachata dancing lessons. (who not try something new right)?

How do you relax?

I try to set aside some down time a few evenings per week when I don’t schedule anything. This feeds my introvert tendencies, which is really important to me to re-energize. I love a cozy night at home cooking Indian or Italian dishes. Travelling and trying new restaurants is important to me so I prioritise those things often but it’s not an everyday occurrence.

What is the best part of what you do?

The most rewarding part of coaching is working with clients on a day-to-day basis. I love being able to help motivate people to achieve their health, fitness, and life goals they’ve been unable to achieve themselves. Receiving a message to thank you for kickstarting their new lifestyle change is very rewarding for me. Coaching can be a very lucrative and rewarding career choice, depending on how much time you want to put into it. It does require work, preparation, networking, and dedication – but the rewards and freedom that come along with it are worthwhile. Nobody was born a wellness coach, therefore getting the right training will set new starters on a good foot.

What’s your daily mantra?

Don’t wish it were easier. Wish you were better!

Transformation is within reach for us all. No matter what your internal narrator whispers, your past does not determine your future!
