Interview with Author LaToya Martin

As a teen, Author LaToya Martin had more of a love for drawing instead –  writing was never interesting to her. In school, LaToya had a particular assignment and that’s when she wrote her first poem called “What Love is Like”. Years later as many trials in her life began to unfold, LaToya began writing more and more, and overtime her love for poetry grew. It became an outlet for her to be able to release all the emotions she was feeling.

Writing poetry has helped LaToya cope with a tremendous amount of hurt and pain. It’s always her desire to convey positive messages to her readers.

It is her goal to spread God’s word through her poetry, so that people who stumble upon her work may find comfort and healing.

There is power in words.  LaToya wants her readers to be able to view her work and say, “She understands how I feel!” LaToya  is the mother of two teenage daughters. Her poetry has been published in local magazines and newspapers. When she isn’t writing, LaToya Martin loves fishing, visiting haunted locations, and photography.

Tell me more about your latest book

My new book “Tears of Me” is a collection of poetry about suffering, love and loss. A book full of emotions in its many forms. In my book, I discuss issues that we face daily in our everyday lives and I give those issues a voice.  I want to share my poems with readers’ who are struggling or feeling down because I believe in the healing power of words. My voice is a non-judgemental light for anyone experiencing the darkness of loss, depression, and pain. I believe my poems are rays of light, and so my poetry is a reflection of me.

What was the most challenging aspect of writing this book?

I have experienced a tremendous amount of hurt and pain and as a writer, I’ve  had to relive those personal traumas. I believe there is healing in words and I used the pain and grief to fuel my writing.

What is your normal procedure to get your books published?

I did not self-publish, so finding the right publisher was a challenge for me.  I contacted a great publishing company and I was asked to submit a certain amount of my poetry. Afterwards, the publisher gave me great feedback and the publishing process began.

What would you like readers to take away from reading your book?

I want to leave my readers with the feeling of  comfort, healing and love, I want my readers to be able to view my work and say, “She understands how I feel!”

How many books have you written so far?

I’ve written many books but I’ve published only one book so far. “Tears of Me” is my first poetry collection.

As an author, do you prefer the traditional book or online version?

I prefer the traditional printed book. As a reader, I have to feel the words of the writer in my hands.

How hard or easy is it to establish and maintain a career in writing?

My genre is poetry, it can be difficult getting poetry out there but social media has helped a lot. I love writing and eventually I see myself establishing and maintaining a career in writing.

What is your advice for aspiring writers?

Be confident and acknowledge that your writing is a gift.
